Frequently asked questions
Wondering what to expect? Questions you may have before getting started.
What can I expect from the 15-minute consultation call?
The consultation call is a relaxed opportunity for us to have a brief chat before booking a session. You can tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether I might be the right therapist for you. There is no pressure to make a decision during the call.
What can I expect from my first session?
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other a little and talk about what has brought you to counselling. There is no pressure to share more than you feel ready to. We can go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
How many sessions can or should I have?
There is no set number of sessions that is right for everyone. Some people find a shorter period of therapy helpful, while others choose to work together for longer. We can talk about what feels right for you and review things as we go. There is no pressure to commit to a particular number of sessions from the beginning.
How long are the sessions?
The sessions last 50 minutes.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy is treated confidentially. There are some limited exceptions relating to safety and professional responsibilities, which I will explain clearly when we begin working together.
What is your cancellation policy?
Regular attendance is an important part of the therapeutic process. Having a consistent time and space for our sessions helps us build continuity and allows the work to develop over time. I understand that sometimes plans need to change, and appointments can be cancelled or rescheduled without charge when at least 24 hours’ notice is given. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged at the full session fee.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Sessions are available online, in person in Ashford, Co. Wicklow, or as a combination of both.
What if I am nervous about starting therapy?
That is very common. Reaching out can feel like a big step, particularly if you have never been to counselling before. You do not need to arrive knowing what to say. We can begin wherever you are.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
Feeling comfortable with your therapist is important. I offer a free 15-minute introductory call so you can ask any questions, get a sense of how I work and see whether it feels like a good fit. If we do begin working together, you are never tied into a set number of sessions and you can choose to stop at any time.
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression alongside talking. It can offer another way to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences, particularly when something feels difficult to explain or put into words.
You do not need to be artistic or have any experience of making art. The focus is not on creating something that looks good, but on what comes up for you through the process. Sometimes an image, colour, shape or piece of work can help you notice or express something that may be harder to reach through conversation alone.
Art therapy can be used as much or as little as feels right for you. Some people are naturally drawn to working creatively, while others may prefer to talk. There is no pressure to use art materials, and we can decide together what feels most comfortable and helpful for you.
Do I need to be artistic to try Art Therapy?
No. You do not need any artistic experience or ability. Art therapy is not about creating something that looks good. It is about using creativity as another way of expressing and understanding what is going on for you.
If you are an Art Therapist, does that mean I HAVE to do Art Therapy?
No, not at all. It is always optional. We can work through talking therapy alone, or include creative approaches if they feel helpful to you. I have a mix of clients who do and don't use it, and some who just dip in when the moment is right for them.
